Clough Hall School Diversity Project
Letting in the Light were commissioned by Staffordshire County Council's Ethnic Minority Achievement Unit (EMAU) to work with pupils at Clough Hall School, Kidsgrove.
To begin with the pupils took close up pictures of each others faces. These were then printed out and the pupils begun to look at identity and differences through words and poetry. They read some poems and listened to songs dealing with identity and then worked on their own poems/songs.
The pupils then worked in groups to cut their photos up and reassemble them using them so that no two are the same. They drew around the montaged image onto acetate and then projected these images on to silk panels to be drawn out large-scale. The panels were then waxed and dyed.
In addition to this a smaller group created A2 wax resist on paper images for entry in to the national Young Brits at Art competition. Two of the pieces were selected from thousands of entries to be in the final 100 pieces of work, and the pupils attended the Albert Hall in October 2006 where the final judging took place.
