Pennybank House Memories

Letting in the Light were contacted by Pennybank House, a mental health drop-in centre in Leek, about facilitating a creative project. Having consulted with staff and centre users it emerged that they were keen to undertake a project that would allow the group to remember their friends that were no longer with them and celebrate the present. The staff were keen for the centre users to have access to some creative learning that not only engaged the group with ICT equipment but would also give them the opportunity to think creatively and use new equipment such as digital cameras, video and sound equipment, while encouraging the group to practice their literary skills.

To facilitate the practicing of literary skills the group worked with Maria Whatton, Creative Writer and Story Teller. From the images, the stories and memories the group produced, they worked on a follow on project that involved them creating 3 large scale, vibrant, wax-resist on silk panels which are now displayed in the conservatory of at Pennybank House. The group also had the opportunity to work with sound practitioner James Earls-Davis to facilitate the groups love of music and the sound track was used to compliment a film of images from the project.

The group held an event on 21st July 2006 where an exhibition of images, the silk panels and the project film were shown. The exhibition was a success and enjoyed by all on a hot sunny day - a fitting end to the project!

The first strand was funded by Staffordshire County Council's Community Learning Fund and the second by The Allen Lane Foundation.
