Ravensmead School Audley Parish at War
Letting in the Light received funding from
Homefront Recall to work in
Audley Parish. The project involved pupils at
Ravensmead County Primary School in Bignall End and members of the
local community. The pupil's interviewed the older community about their memories of WWII and after working with
FRONTLINEdance to create a dance piece, the pupils held a WWII themed tea dance.
Images from the sessions have been used by artist
Emily Campbell to create a 6x4 meter floor piece, which can be walked over. The 'floor' or 'performance stage' reflects elements of Audley Parish at War and has been named 'Somewhere Over the Rainbow.' Emily says, 'WW2 was a time full of both euphoria and tragedy. A time of anticipated adventure but also of fear, dread and apprehension, of heart warming homecomings and celebration.
The butterflies, ladybirds and fish flutter and dance within the magical landscape, whilst the children enact scenes of the hardship endured, from bombs on the beach to much loved family members leaving home. 'Somewhere Over the Rainbow' aims to reflect this time of conflicting emotions, walking over the enchanted landscape, the stories of hardship un-fold.'
The floor piece is made using digital photography and printed onto a specialist dance floor. More than 200 separate photographs are digitally manipulated to create the 'unreal' landscape. The children were all photographed from above during the dance sessions, to give the impression they are within the landscape itself.
Whilst wandering over the floor piece, the viewer can hear a soundtrack, created by
James Earls-Davis, that tells the stories and can view the project film by
Darryl O'Hara.
